About Republic of the Congo

The Republic of the Congo, often called Congo-Brazzaville, lies on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa west of the Congo River. It became independent from France in 1960 and was proclaimed Africa's first people's republic a decade later. Oil dominates the economy, and Denis Sassou Nguesso returned to the presidency in 1997 after an earlier term from 1979.
