About São Tomé and Príncipe
São Tomé and Príncipe is a volcanic two-island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, uninhabited until Portuguese ships arrived in 1470. Sugar and then cocoa plantations worked by enslaved Africans made it a slave-trade hub and, by the early 1900s, the world's largest cocoa exporter. It became independent in 1975 and is Africa's second-smallest sovereign state.
