About South Sudan

South Sudan is a landlocked East African country whose centre is dominated by the vast Sudd swamp along the Nile. It became independent on 9 July 2011 after an overwhelming referendum vote, making it the newest widely recognised sovereign state. Juba is its capital, oil funds most of the budget, and civil war has scarred its short history.
