Eritrea is a Horn of Africa country with a long Red Sea coastline, bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Its capital Asmara, listed by UNESCO in 2017, is famous for Italian-era modernist architecture. Independence came in 1993 after a thirty-year war, and Isaias Afwerki has led the one-party state ever since.
