About Mauritania

Mauritania is a vast Islamic republic on West Africa's Atlantic coast, with most of its land in the Sahara. Independent from France in 1960, it has seen repeated coups and still struggles with descent-based slavery. Iron ore dominates its exports, and the Richat Structure, the so-called Eye of the Sahara, marks the Adrar Plateau.
