About Algeria

Algeria is the largest country in Africa, running from a Mediterranean coast across the Sahara to Mount Tahat. It became independent on 5 July 1962 after 132 years of French rule, and its economy rests on vast oil and gas reserves worked by Sonatrach. Its heritage spans Numidian kings, Saint Augustine of Hippo and the Casbah of Algiers.
