About Gambia
The Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa, a narrow ribbon of land following its namesake river and surrounded by Senegal except along the Atlantic coast. Its island capital, Banjul, was called Bathurst in colonial times. Independent from Britain in 1965, it endured 22 years of Yahya Jammeh's rule before an ECOWAS intervention in 2017.
