About Liberia

Liberia began as a settlement project of the American Colonization Society for free Black Americans and declared independence in 1847, becoming Africa's oldest continuously independent republic. Two civil wars devastated the country before Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected Africa's first female president in 2005. The capital and largest city is Monrovia.
