Suriname is South America's smallest country and has been independent from the Netherlands since 1975. Over 90 percent of it is rainforest, the highest forest cover of any nation, and it is the only independent state outside Europe where Dutch prevails. Its capital, Paramaribo, holds a UNESCO-listed inner city of Dutch colonial architecture.
