About Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in South America and the only Portuguese-speaking nation in the Americas. Claimed for Portugal by Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500, it became an empire in 1822 and a republic in 1889, with a purpose-built inland capital inaugurated in 1960. Today it holds most of the Amazon basin, the largest economy in Latin America, and a record five football World Cup titles.
