About Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a landlocked West African country of some 23 million people, with Ouagadougou as its capital and largest city. Known as Upper Volta until Thomas Sankara renamed it in 1984, it has seen repeated coups and a long jihadist insurgency. Gold dominates its exports, and Ouagadougou hosts the continent's largest film festival, FESPACO.
