About Lebanon
Lebanon is a small Levantine republic on the Mediterranean, with Beirut as its capital and largest city. Its coast held the Phoenician cities of Byblos, Sidon and Tyre, and the cedar remains its national emblem. A confessional system reserves the top offices for Maronite, Sunni and Shia figures. Civil war and the 2020 port explosion have marked recent decades.
