About Myanmar
Myanmar, long known as Burma, is the largest country by area in mainland Southeast Asia, stretching from Himalayan peaks to the Bay of Bengal. Its Irrawaddy valley cradled the temple-filled Pagan Kingdom and later empires before British annexation and independence in 1948. Decades of military rule culminated in the 2021 coup and an ongoing civil war.
