About Laos

Laos is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, and its capital and largest city is Vientiane on the Mekong. The kingdom of Lan Xang, meaning a million elephants, gave way to French rule and then to a communist republic in 1975. American bombing between 1964 and 1973 left it the most heavily bombed country in history per capita.
