About Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan lies on the Caspian Sea in the South Caucasus, with Baku as its capital and largest city. Ruled for centuries from Iran before Russian conquest, it became the first secular democratic Muslim-majority state in 1918 and regained independence in 1991. Oil wealth, mud volcanoes and eternal gas flames earned it the nickname land of fire.
