About Ireland

The island held about 8.2 million people before the Great Famine; the Republic and Northern Ireland together have roughly 7 million today. The blight of 1845 to 1852 destroyed the crop that most rural families depended on. Four Nobel laureates in literature, from Yeats to Heaney, wrote here in English.
