Answers

Round 1 answer

Mexico · North America

Clue 5: The location is Mexico.

Mexico is the northernmost country of Latin America, bordering the United States, Guatemala and Belize. Its territory holds the heartland of Mesoamerican civilisation, from Teotihuacan and the Maya to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, on whose ruins Mexico City stands. Today it is the world's largest Spanish-speaking nation, a megadiverse country and one of the most visited destinations on earth.

Round 2 answer

Belarus · Europe

Clue 5: The location is Belarus.

Belarus is a landlocked Eastern European country of about 9.1 million people, bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Its capital and largest city is Minsk, and roughly 43 percent of the land is forest. Independent since 1991, it has been led by Alexander Lukashenko since 1994 and is closely tied to Russia through the Union State.

Round 3 answer

Cambodia · Asia

Clue 5: The location is Cambodia.

Cambodia is a Southeast Asian kingdom built around the Mekong and the Tonle Sap, with Phnom Penh as its capital. Its Khmer Empire raised Angkor Wat before centuries of decline, French protection from 1863 and independence in 1953. The Khmer Rouge genocide of 1975 to 1979 still shadows the country, which is now dominated by the Cambodian People's Party.

Round 4 answer

Guinea-Bissau · Africa

Clue 5: The location is Guinea-Bissau.

Guinea-Bissau is a small West African republic of about two million people, once part of the Mali Empire and the warrior federation of Kaabu. Portugal colonised it before independence was declared in 1973 and recognised in 1974. The name of its capital was added to the country's name to avoid confusion with neighbouring Guinea. Cashews, Creole and coups define its modern story.

Round 5 answer

Lesotho · Africa

Clue 5: The location is Lesotho.

Lesotho is a mountainous kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa, the largest of the world's three such enclaves. The whole country lies above 1,000 metres, and its highlands feed a huge water project serving greater Johannesburg. Formed by King Moshoeshoe I in 1824, it became independent in 1966 and is still headed by King Letsie III.
